The School of Industrial Engineering is created, the first initiative of higher education in the city of Rio Grande. The School was the starting point for the creation, 14 years later, of the Federal University of Rio Grande

On August 20, the decree-law number 774 was signed, which authorized the operation of the University of Rio Grande by the unification of city’s first four higher education units. On October 21, through decree number 65.462, the University’s Foundation Bylaws was composed, as an entity which maintains FURG.

The professor Adolpho Gundlach Pradel was named as Rector.
1970
Establishment of the undergraduate program in Oceanology, a pioneering program in Brazil at the undergraduate degree level.
1970
Establishment of the undergraduate program in Business Administration.
1971
FURG receives from the City Hall an area of 250 hectares for the establishment of university campus called Carreiros.
1971
Faculty of Medicine is incorporated in to the university.
1972
Prof. Eurípedes Falcão Vieira becomes FURG’s Rector.

Establishment of the undergraduate program in Civil Engineering.
1973
On May 15, establishment of the Teaching, Research and Extension Council (“Coepe”).

Establishment of the undergraduate programs in Accounting and Library Science.

Legal Assistance Service (“SAJ”) begins to operate.
1976
Establishment of the University Hospital Dr. Miguel Riet Corrêa.
1976
Launching of the Journal “Atlântica”, the first scientific journal edited by the institution.
1977
Prof. Fernando Lopes Pedone becomes FURG’s Rector.
1978
Inauguration of the first buildings of the Atlantic Oceanographic Base at Carreiros Campus.

FURG receives the oceanographic research vessel “Atlântico Sul”.
1979
Establishment of the undergraduate program in Food Engineering and the master’s degree in Biological Oceanography, FURG’s first graduate program.

FURG’s first Book Fair is held.
1982
The University of Rio Grande is invited to participate in Brazilian Antarctic project (“Proantar”), by means of an agreement signed between FURG and Interministerial Commission for Sea Resources, considering the Brazilian government policy of Antarctic continent exploration and the University’s geographical and vocational location being eminently maritime.

Inauguration of Antarctic Support Station (“Esantar”).
1984
Professor Jomar Bessouat Laurino becomes FURG’s Rector.

Establishment of the undergraduate program in Letters – Portuguese/English Teaching Degree, as an extension of FURG to Santa Vitória do Palmar.
1985
Installation of Vice-Rector’s Office, position then occupied by professor Orlando Macedo Fernandes.
1986
The technical degree in Data Processing, jointed to Industrial Technical College, begins to operate.

Undergraduate program in Artistic Education – Plastic Arts Teaching is opened.

FURG becomes a public foundation and takes as institutional vocation the coastal ecosystem, which will guide teaching, research and extension activities.

Inauguration of the University Radio “FM Educativa”, now called FURG FM - 106,7.

Professor Orlando Macedo Fernandes becomes FURG’s fifth Rector.

The undergraduate bachelors in Geography and History begin to operate at Carreiros Campus.

Inauguration of Marine Aquaculture Station, in Cassino.

Establishment of the doctoral program in Biological Oceanography, FURG’s first doctorate.

Professor Carlos Rodolfo Brandão Hartmann becomes FURG’s Rector.

Teaching, Research and Extension Council approves the establishment of the undergraduate programs in Computer Engineering and Letters – Portuguese/Spanish Teaching (morning and evening schedule) to open in 1994.

Inauguration of the Center for Integral Attention to Children and Adolescents (“Caic”), the only one operating in a university campus in Brazil.

Inauguration of the University Hospital’s academic area, significantly improving the conditions of Medicine and Nursing undergraduate programs.

Conclusion of the Laboratories of Physics and the Caic II. The entire Department of Physics and part of the Department of Materials and Construction are transferred to Carreiros Campus, as well as the Civil Engineering and the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate programs.
