In 1990, a Satellite Oceanography Group was established at University of Rio Grande (FURG), Rio Grande (RS), BRAZIL, with the wide objective of using remote sensing data to increase our understanding with respect to physical and biological oceanic processes. In 1992, the proposal Physical/Biological/Optical Measurements in the Atlantic Ocean for Development of Basin and Local Bio-Optical Algorithms was approved by NASA, and since then we have been conducting bio-optical measurements in the South Atlantic and Southern Oceans for calibrating and developing regional algorithms for SeaWiFS validation program. In October 1995, an HRPT (High Resolution Picture Transmission) ground receiving station was installed at Department of Physics in Rio Grande (RS), to receive online AVHRR/NOAA and SeaWiFS/SeaStar satellite data. A new proposal was accepted by NASA in 1997, entitled Remote Sensing of Primary Production in the Southwestern Atlantic and Southern Oceans, which seeks a general approach to increase our understanding of long-term trends of oceanic phytoplankton biomass and primary production in this region. To achieve this goal, a series of shipboard measurements have been and will be conducted onboard Brazilian research vessels. This site shows the results obtained by FURG Ocean Colour Group.
